Thu 28th Sep 3:30 pm 4:30 pm | The Palace often conjures images of the Governors and their families who called the building home. Fri 29th Sep 7:30 pm 10:00 pm | Written by multiple award-winning playwright, Lauren Gunderson, four beautiful, badass women lose their heads in this irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. Playwright, Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen (and fan of ribbons) Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle hang out, murder Marat, and try to beat back the extremist insanity in 1793 Paris. This grand and dream-tweaked comedy is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how we actually go about changing the world. It’s a true story. Or total fiction. Or a play about a play. Or a raucous resurrection… that ends in a song and a scaffold! (If this blurb doesn’t sell tickets… nothing will.) Fri 6th Oct 2:30 pm 9:30 pm | Lemon Tree 2008 – Israel / Arabic and Hebrew Biography / Drama – NR This event has 2 screenings – 2:30 PM and 7:30 PM Salma Zidane, a widow, lives simply through her grove of lemon trees in the West Bank’s occupied territory. The Israeli defense minister and his wife move next door and then the Secret Service orders the trees removed for security. The stoic Salma seeks assistance from the Palestinian Authority (useless), Israeli army (dismissive), and a young attorney, Ziad Daud, who takes the case; this older client attracts him. While the courts deliberate, the Israelis fence her trees and prohibit her from entering the grove. As the trees wither, the defense minister’s wife and, separately, an Israeli journalist, look on Salma with sympathy. In this allegory, does David stand a chance against Goliath? (107 minutes) Due to the variety of languages and accents represented, as well as accommodation for the hearing impaired, all films are shown with English subtitles. Fri 6th Oct 7:30 pm 10:00 pm | Keeping its promise to bring the best of world class world music concerts to New Bern in 2023, New Bern Civic Theatre will proudly present FOGO NO TRIO on October 6, 2023. This young instrumental string trio is made up of three multi award-winning international musicians who specialize in Choro. Choro was the first popular Brazilian music, emerging in the 1870s, and is the precursor to samba, bossa nova and modern popular Brazilian music. Renowned for its virtuosic musicianship and diverse rhythmic palette, it is one of the most exciting instrumental genres on the planet Click this YouTube link to see why Fogo No Trio is earning rave reviews around the globe. Fogo No Trio: youtu.be/q2GFDH5a5d0 Meet Fogo No Trio Andrew Finn Magill on violin has been featured on NPR and PBS. He grew up in western NC with parents who played traditional music in the home. He ditched Suzuki method violin practice to play Irish music and went to Ireland twice to compete in the all-Ireland violin championships. As a kid, he would take part in the jam sessions at Asheville’s Jack of the Wood, and his father, Jim, founded the Swannanoa Gathering. Magill moved to Brazil in 2014 to immerse himself in Brazilian choro music and in 2018 was signed to Ropeadope Records for his original Brazilian music project. He followed that release in 2021 with the sequel Festa! Says legendary Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira (Miles Davis, Chick Corea, etc): “He can fool you into thinking he is from Brazil!” On the 7-string guitar is Brazilian-born Cesar Garabini, who moved to New York City in 2011 to expand his musical knowledge. Since then, he has performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Jazz Standard, Birdland, Columbia University, and the Museum of Modern Art. He has worked with Anat Cohen, Olli Soikkeli, Leny Andrade and Marcos Sacramento among others and has been featured on NPR, NBC and Brazil’s national TV network Globo. On bandolim (Brazilian mandolin) is Ian Coury, who has been accruing professional awards and accolades since age 12. At 20 years old, he is one of Brazil’s most-respected virtuosos on the 10-string mandolin. As he continues to push the boundaries of the instrument and of the choro genre, he has performed with such luminaries as Hamilton de Holanda, Paquito D’Rivera, Claudio Roditi, and Toninho Horta, and in the past two years has received two important awards: “Best Instrumentalist” in the National FM Radio Festival (2020), and second place (by popular vote) in Brazil’s eFestival (2021), both for performances of original compositions.
