The Palace often conjures images of the Governors and their families who called the building home. What often is missing from the picture, however, is the number of staff, free and enslaved, who cooked the food, cared for the horses, emptied the chamber pots, and anything else that was required to make a life of luxury possible.
“Life on the Lesser Stairs” will take you on a tour of the Palace, Stables, and Kitchen Office to shine a light on the individuals who also called the Palace home but whose lives were not as glamorous.
Tour goes to the Palace, Stables, and Kitchen Office first floors. Space is limited on each tour and flash photography is prohibited. Tours may involve walking and climbing stairs.

Come celebrate Independence Day with Tryon Palace! From the steps of the Palace hear the Declaration of Independence read by a costumed interpreter. Hear the passion in his voice as he declares the independence of the colonies from English rule. This is a day of festivities with demonstrations at the encampment, Fife & Drum Corps performances, firing of the muskets and free Pepsi products!
Itinerary: Begins at 10:00 AM

Procession of Fife & Drum and Continental Line to South Lawn
Reading of the Declaration of Independence on Palace South Steps
1st North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Line will be encamped and do a firing demonstration after the reading
Fife and Drum Corps will perform immediately after the reading
Admittance to the Gardens is FREE all day.
Philadelphia held the first annual commemoration of independence on July 4, 1777, while Congress was still occupied with the ongoing war. In 1778, New Bern was the site of the first celebration in North Carolina under federal authorization. This is believed to be the first observance of the fourth of July as Independence Day in North Carolina, and the third celebration in the nation, following those in Boston and Philadelphia.

Like history and music? You’ll like this one! And it’s a chance to see the first run of a brand-new musical! You’ll learn a little-known story of Keith and Malinda Blalock from Grandfather Mountain—the “Bonnie and Clyde of North Carolina.” He supported the Union cause, but the Confederate Army wanted him. So, he joined them. And so did she. He was initially unaware that she had disguised herself as a man to join him in his adventure. You’ll follow their exploits from the Battle of Kinston and back to the west where they join a band of Union-favoring Bushwhackers. Their story is told by Bill Hand with music by James Merritt, two of Eastern North Carolina’s finest!
Show dates are July 19, 20, 26 & 27 at 7pm and July 21 & 28 at 2pm at Craven Community College’s Orringer Auditorium.
Presented i partnership with Craven Community College.
olTickets will be available June 1 at www.NCHistoryTheater.org and at the Bank of the Arts at 317 Middle Street, New Bern.
